We arrived in KC and got tucked in at the Worlds of Fun RV Resort. This is a great resort as it is adjacent to the Worlds of Fun Amusement Park and the Oceans of Fun Water Park. If you have kids, you will definitely want to load them up and take them here.
The first full day we were here, we took off to look at some of the historic sites related to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It was in Missouri that things came to a head and Gov. Boggs had the Extermination Order given on October 27, 1838. Joseph Smith, Founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had received a revelation on July 20,1831that specifically named Missouri as the "land which I have appointed and consecrated for the gathering of the saints" and designated Independence, Missouri, as the center place for the "City of Zion." After a brief tour and introduction at the Independence Visitors Center about the Church and early activities in Independence, we were hungry and headed out to a BBQ joint just down the street.

This is the Temple for the Reformed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) across from the LDS Independence Visitors Center. As we walked around the area, we noticed MANY Churches from various denominations that are in these small few blocks of area.
The BBQ place we ate lunch at is called "The Little BBQ Joint." The food was good and the sauces were great! the decor of the place is automobiles, I mean they have automotive signs, pieces of autos and trucks hanging on the wall and even the bar was built on top of what appeared to be an old Impala!

Pulled pork sandwich, Carolina Style with hot potato salad and pea salad made a great lunch. Our booth was made out of car seats!

Susan said she is all three of those, guess that makes her "pretty saucy"!
After lunch we headed for the jail that Joseph Smith and a few of his companions were held in during the unrest in Missouri. The location is now a visitors center operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS Church) and includes an indoor cut-away reconstruction of the jail on its original site, at 216 North Main.

The stone outside walls are two feet thick, inside of that is another two-foot-thick section of loose rock and then one-foot-thick oak beams make up the inner wall. As you can see, the roof above the room used by the jailers also had rock piled in it so escape was very unlikely. The ladder leads down into the dungeon which is not tall enough to stand straight up in and where Joseph Smith and his four associates were held from November 1838 to April 1839. They were transferred from this jail to Gallatin, MO where they were being charged by a grand jury and successfully obtained a change of venue to Boone County, MO. En-route to Boone County, Joseph and his associates were allowed to escape when the Sheriff and three deputies drank whiskey. It was the fourth deputy that helped them saddle the horses and escape to Quincy, IL to later regroup in Nauvoo, IL. Tomorrow, we will head to Far West, MO where a settlement was setup just for the Church members in hopes of keeping the peace. Thanks for coming along with us!
