Rocky Harbor sits just up the coast from where we got off the ferry from Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is home to Gros Morne National Park. It is home to whales in the bay, fresh seafood and a wonderful musical show at the Anchor Hotel called Anchors Away. A few things about Newfoundland' they are proud of who they are and do not like to leave the "rock" as it is referred to. They proudly state that Canada joined them in 1949, they were the last province to become part of Canada. They are primarily Irish and Scottish descendants, and as we were told are not fluent in English or French. You will have the actual name for an item and then the Newfoundlander's will have their own name for it. An example is the cloud berry, a small, orange colored raspberry look alike. The locals know it as a bakeapple. Your backside getting numb and tired from sitting to long? In Newfoundland that is referred to as "your arse is getting dunched." "who knit ya" is asking who are your parents. The people and their sayings are as colorful as the fishing shacks and houses
Gros Morne National Park is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is here that you can see and walk on the earths mantle. It is one of only a few places that you can see the mantle. Gros Morne was formed by the collision and separation of the North American and African tectonic plates, which led to the closing of the Iapetus Ocean and the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. We started with a boat tour of Bonne Bay. It was a great day for a bay cruise, no wind or rain.

You can see the uplift caused by the collision and separation of the plates.
Bonne Bay is next to Rocky Harbor and is part of the Gros Morne Park. Here are some photos of the area on the bay.

We ended our stay with a great musical show at the Anchor Inn called "Anchors Away." The group plays together twice a week during the evening and work their day jobs on the tour boats on Bonne Bay. The musicians are all in demand for studio sessions. From here, it is on to Twillingate, another picturesque outport on the north central coast. Hope to see you there!
